Maclaren
The first Maclaren Baby Buggy was born in 1965 when Owen Maclaren designed and patented his prototype Baby Buggy.
Maclaren had previously been a test pilot and aeronautical designer and had been involved in the design of the Spitfire fighter plane undercarriage. It was the experience he gained by working with lightweight, rigid, load-bearing structures that gave him the skills to design a new lightweight and compact pram in which to push his grand-daughter.
Owen Maclaren was awarded an MBE for his work before dying in April 1978 at the age of 71.
Today Maclaren "Buggies" (otherwise known as umbrella strollers) are sold in over 50 countries around the world. The major export markets are the USA, Australia and Europe.
Maclaren claim to offer "convenience, safety, quality, portability and style" through their expanded range of baby products.
