Introduction
Peg Perego have been producing quality prams since 1949, however the Skate is unlike any of their previous designs. Suitable from birth till 20kgs and manufactured in Italy, the Skate not only looks fantastic but is also of exceptional quality. The Skate has quite obviously been designed to keep up with today’s modern trends. With competition like the Bugaboo Cameleon and the Stokke Xplory, the Skate has a lot to live up to. It seems to be doing a pretty good job of it too. The skate is definitely a top of the range pram, with a unique eye-catching design and a myriad of features, it’s hard not to consider this stylish pram for your little one! With two-in-one versatility, the Skate effortlessly transforms from a carriage to a stroller, diminishing the need for a separate bassinette. The Skate comes in four different colours, Green Bubbles (pictured), Red Bubbles, Black Bubbles and Moka.
Seat design and function
As already mentioned, the seat on the Skate is designed to easily transform from seat to bassinette and back again. This removes the need for an extra bassinette. Switching between seat and bassinette and vice versa is very easy, and literally takes seconds. I was actually very surprised at how quick and easy it was! To change from bassinette to seat you pull on the black straps one at a time, located just behind the hood and on either side of the pram, and hook them over the clips. To go from seat to bassinette, you simply release them.
A brilliant feature of the Skate, which is probably my favourite, is that the seat/ bassinette has three height positions. Changing the height is relatively easy to do, by depressing the two grey buttons simutaneously that are located on either side of the chassis. This is much easier to do with the brake on, otherwise the pram moves, making it a rather tricky task.
When in stroller mode, the Skate seat has three recline positions, upright, semi upright and fully reclined. I will mention that when the seat is fully reclined and the two bottom straps haven’t been released, as they would if it was in bassinette mode, the seat is a bucket style seat, so the child’s legs wouldn’t be completely flat. If this is a problem, it is ridiculously easy to release the straps to alleviate this issue. There is a grey lever on the back of the seat to adjust the seat to the desired setting, this is easy to do without a child onboard, however, I find I need to use more force and my free hand to adjust the seat whilst my toddler is in the pram.
The seat on the Skate detaches easily from the chassis, by pressing two small grey levers simutaneously. These levers are located at the base of the hood, on either side of the pram. The seat can either face mum/dad or the world. If the child is under 9kgs they are able to be lifted off the skate frame whilst in the bassinette, the removable bumper bar is the perfect carrying handle. Whilst on the subject of the bumper bar, it is completely removable and can be opened so an older child can climb in and out of the Skate with ease. The bumper bar is removed/opened by squeezing the buttons located on either end of the bumper bar. I find this a really nice feature of the Skate, and compared to other bumper bars, like the one on my Bugaboo Cameleon, this one is a lot easier to remove and replace and can be done very quickly and easily.
The seat on the Skate not only looks good, it looks comfortable too. All the seat fabric on the Skate is removable and can be hand washed. I have found that food etc wipes off the seat very easily. Peg perego provides detailed instructions on how to remove the seat fabric.

Child safety harness
As with all Peg Perego prams, the Skate features a ‘freedom of movement harness’, which allows the child to move their torso freely, whilst still being strapped in. Personally, I’m not so sure I like this style of harness, as my toddler is able to reach out of the pram and touch things that he shouldn’t. He also takes great pleasure in rocking back and forth, making the whole pram move and squeak. This design of harness also isn’t ideal if you like to get your toddler to sleep in the pram, as my son turns around to look at me, this problem can be solved by opening the hood, so that they are out of your view.
When placing my son in the Skate, I find that the harness can get bunched up under him and I need to fiddle around quite a bit to get him strapped in securely. I’m sure this will get easier with practise. I will mention that whilst the skate is in bassinette mode, the child safety harness can be completely tucked away under the seat padding, which is very handy. I do, however find the quality of the clips on the harness very good and easy to do and undo. This harness may not be 100% to my liking but my toddler thinks it’s great!

Hood or Canopy
The hood on the Skate couldn’t be much better in my opinion. As shown in the pictures, it can be unzipped to extend out further. The hood unextended provides okay coverage - unzipped, it provides fantastic coverage. The hood is slightly stiff to open, and makes a slight noise, possibly not enough to wake a sleeping baby.

Handle design and function
The handle on the Skate is telescopic as well as adjustable in height, making it suitable for people of any height. For the telescopic part(moving the handle closer to you), the two grey levers on either side of the handle need to be raised simutaneously whilst moving the handlebar to the desired setting. It helps if you place one foot on the back of the pram whilst doing this, or putting the brake on, otherwise the whole pram will move. After you have done this, it’s a good idea to gently push on the handle to make sure that it is locked into the desired setting, otherwise it will slide back down whilst you are pushing the Skate.
The handle height can simply be adjusted by releasing the two grey clips pictured on either side of the handlebar. Move the handlebar to the desired height and then clip the clips back in. This is a very easy and quick process.
The Skate’s handle is foam and very comfortable to use. I am 5'8" and I need the handle adjusted close to me, and at about the middle setting for height, otherwise I find that I kick the back of the pram.

Storage
The storage underneath the Skate is unlike any other on the market - it definitely adds to the unique look of the Skate. I will describe it as an elastic shelf. It is completely open, your goods can be secured by the elastic cord. This ‘shelf’ wouldn’t be suitable for smaller items. Since I don’t carry lots of smaller items in my pram baskets normally, I love this style of storage. I can easily fit a large nappy bag, a nappy wallet and bags of shopping on it. I even once had my son’s quite large school bag and another rather big bag of items on the ‘shelf’.
The other storage on this pram is a small pocket on the back of the Skate’s seat. It sits flush to the back of the seat and secures with a small strip of Velcro. I have fit my sunnies and a small bottle of water at most. But it is a handy pocket for keys etc.

Wheels and Brakes
All the wheels on the Skate have springs and ball bearings. The front wheels swivel and lock, the back wheels have inner tubes. All of the wheels on the Skate are easy to remove.
To remove the back wheels, the small grey pin, located near each of the rear wheels need to be pulled out, and the wheels will simply come off. To put the wheels back on, you simply push them back on until they click into place. To remove the front wheels, you just turn the knob above the wheel in the direction instructed - it is clearly labelled. To put them on just push them in and turn until it clicks. I personally haven’t owned any other pram or stroller that has made it so easy to remove the wheels. I think it is fantastic that Peg Perego has clearly labelled the front wheels.
To lock the front wheels so that they don’t swivel you simply depress the black lever located on either front wheel.
The Skate has a centralized brake. To engage the brake you simply depress either of the red levers on the back of the pram with your foot. This is very easy to do - not stiff at all.

Fold mechanism
The Skate has a big fold. That being said I can get this into my hatch, with the bumper bar and cup holder removed. It is a tight squeeze but can be done. The beauty of the Skate is that the seat can stay attached to the chassis to be folded or it can be removed to make it into two lighter parts, rather than one relatively heavy one.
Folding the Skate with the seat facing outwards is very straightforward. The seat needs to be in the lowest height setting, it also needs to be aligned with the chassis(ie semi-reclined), the left then right levers need to be pulled up, whilst your foot is pressing on the fold pedal at the back of the pram which is very clearly labelled. The Skate then easily collapses, and can then be locked by a clip that is conveniently hidden, so that when the pram is picked up it will stay in a nice neat package. You can also lock the front wheels so that they don’t swivel and pull it behind you, which is handy for a pram of this size.
If the Skate seat is facing the parents the safety trigger needs to be pulled out, while simultaneously reclining the seat by pulling up the handle behind the back rest, then follow the directions as above.

Manoeuvrability
The Skate is lovely to steer and has a really good turning circle for such a large pram. This could be because the front swivelling wheels run on six ball bearings. It can be steered one handed but is slightly heavy in say comparison to the Bugaboo Cameleon. It glides through shops with ease. It is a nice pram to go walking with on paths and smooth roads. It steers straight in these situations, it’s no Mountain Buggy, but it’s not bad at all. As the rear wheels are shock absorbing, it provides a lovely ride for baby. I personally wouldn’t take this pram over gravel or ‘off road’ as such due to the hard front wheels, they would be very prone to damage and would get ‘pitted’ easily.Back to top

Accessories
Included when you purchase the Peg perego Skate is a rain cover, cup holder, boot cover, tyre pump and Peg Perego Primo Viaggo carseat adaptors. Available to purchase separately is a matching nappy bag.
My favourite of the included accessories is the boot cover, it clips on via two press studs, located near where the child’s feet would go at the bottom of the seat, it also has magnets to keep it on. The boot cover unzips to give more room for an older child’s legs. It is quite unusual for a high end pram to come with a boot cover included. It is quite thick and cosy, a lovely accessory in my opinion.
The cup holder is a good design, although the placement is questionable, the cup holder attaches to the outside of the skate, I am constantly catching it on things. I find this quite annoying, but I will admit I love having a cup holder so I will continue to use it, it would however be nice if this could be attached to the inside of the frame.
The Skate also comes with a zip on rain cover which I personally find a little tricky to get on in a hurry. Also the rain cover doesn’t cover the hood of the pram, only the child which means the pram gets wet. Other than that the cover is good quality and looks quite nice on the pram. The tyre pump is very cleverly hidden under the chassis, you wouldn’t even know it was there! It was by pure accident that I discovered it.

Conclusion
The Skate is a lovely luxury and high quality pram which provides a comfy ride for a baby or toddler. Even though it is quite a big pram it fits through standard checkouts with ease, my son looks very comfy in this pram, and I love how much shopping it can hold. It is nice to steer and even nicer to look at. It’s a pricey pram, but for the quality I think it’s worth it. I really wouldn’t recommend this pram for a small car boot, yes it fits in my hatch, only just, it is a struggle and I wouldn’t like to squeeze it in there everyday. I liken the Skate to a bed on wheels. There is however one major gripe I have with the Skate, it is quite a squeaky pram, I’m not sure whether this is due to my son's weight or due to the pram's design. When turned fast it is really apparent, not really something I expected from such a pricey pram. I also wouldn’t recommend the Skate to anyone with back problems who would need to be lifting it in and out of the car regularly, it isn’t a light pram! I would however, feel comfortable recommending this pram to friends and family. As it has alot of lovely features that other prams may not have.
