The Maclaren Techno XT is the top of the range Maclaren stroller available at the moment in Australia (the larger Techno XLR is not available in Australia). I have owned mine for 4 weeks now and it seems to have had a few upgrades on the previous Maclaren prams available prior to May 2008.

It has been marketed towards parents and carers with children from newborn to 4 years of age or 25 kg (55 lbs) / 110cm (43 in) tall.

Seat design and function

The Techno XT seat reclines using 2 handles at either side of the pram and clicks into 4 various positions, the lowest being suitable for newborns when used in conjunction with the head support and foot muff supplied with the XT. Reclining the backrest takes two hands as both handles must be released simultaneously.

The footrest has 2 metal bars which slide out to provide support for younger babies' legs and slide back in to allow toddlers to dangle their feet or rest them on the plastic footplate at the base of the stroller.

The seat measures 35 cm (13.8 in) wide, 23 - 38 cm (9.1 - 15 in) deep and 47 cm (18.5 in) high.

Child safety harness

There is a new harness on all Maclarens for 2008. It is quite firm to unlock and you need to press on both the front and the back of the clip to unlock it. To fasten the harness I am finding it still a little tricky after 4 weeks of solid use, but it clips from the sides and is best demonstrated in the photo. It looks to have been designed to be sturdy and a little tough to undo for those little fingers.

There are 2 different shoulder harness slots and 2 crotch slots (a new feature) which are very easily adjusted thanks to the easy access to the rear of the seat. They measure 13 and 18 cm (5 and 7 in)from the back of the pram on the base, and on the seat back 26 and 33 cm (10 and 13 in) from the base of the pram.

Hood or Canopy

The Maclaren Techno XT has an amazing hood. It has the standard hood which measures 50 cm or 19.7 in long and an additional UV treated plastic which folds out from underneath the main part of the hood (24 cm or 9.4 in long). As a third part of the hood there is a zip away portion that can add another 29 cm or 11.4 in to the cover. This equals a total of 103 cm or 40.6 in. I owned a Bugaboo Bee previous to this stroller and thought that hood was also incredible. It is nice to see stroller manufacturers are finally thinking about sun protection!

The hood is quiet to operate and has a UV protected plastic viewing window with a mesh cover.

Handle design and function

The Techno handles are made of foam insulated plastic and are quite comfortable on the hands. In Australia there is also a security strap which is designed to be put on the operator’s wrist to prevent accidental loss of control of the stroller.

The handles are height adjustable which is a new feature for me using Maclarens (smaller models do not have this feature). The lowest height measures 109 cm (43 in) from the handles to the ground, and 114 cm (45 in) in its highest position.

The storage on the Techno XT is a little inadequate in my opinion. There is a mesh basket which measures 34 cm (13.4 in) long x 30 cm (11.8 in) wide x 24 cm (9.4 in) high. There are also two pockets on the back of the hood, one mesh and one for storing mobile phones and wipes etc. The mesh pocket measures 22 cm (8.7 in) x 15 cm (6 in) and the fabric 18 cm (7 in) x 22 cm (8.7 in). I tend to hang a nappy bag on the handles, but am cautious not to overbalance the stroller (Maclaren strollers will tip if too much weight is hung off the back without a child in the seat to counter-balance the weight).

The storage basket is quite difficult to access when the seat is in the reclined position; I am able to get small things in only from the left side due to the pram closing clip on the right side of the stroller. When upright, you can store a few more things in the underseat basket, I would hesitate putting anything heavy in it.

There are 4 sets of double wheels on the Maclaren Techno XT. They are made from hard rubber. All four sets have individual suspension and the ability to be locked into a fixed position. Each wheel measures 16 x 3cm (6.3 x 1.2 in).

I have used this stroller extensively in shopping centres and on grass/footpaths/gravel surfaces. It performs quite well in all circumstances and seems quite comfortable for the child. I would not use this as my main walking pram but for quick trips in and out of school yards it does well.

The wheels cannot be removed, however the front swivel wheels can be locked by clicking the buttons on the tops of each front wheel.

Rear Wheels

In line with the new compulsory standards, all Maclaren strollers sold in Australia have red brakes. The two brakes above the rear wheels engage both brakes at the same time. This works by engaging a pin into the spokes on the inner side of the wheel. In Australia there is also a wrist safety strap provided on the handle of the pram.

The brakes are quite easy to use with your foot and clip on and off with a little pressure.

Fold mechanism

In order to fold the Techno the seat needs to be in the upright position and the hood needs to be pushed back. With both hands on the handles you gently lift the middle clip between the red brakes on the rear of the pram and then with your right foot press downwards on the clip at the side of the pram. Pushing forwards and downwards you can then collapse the stroller until it clicks into the locking clip also located on the right hand side of the pram. This locking sometimes takes one or two goes if the fabric of the stroller isn’t quite compact enough during the fold.

The fold mechanism on the pram is quite quick and simple, but I feel this is because I have been folding Maclarens for years and the design hasn’t changed. I owned a Bugaboo Bee and the fold on that was seamless and seemed to fold of its own accord.

To lift the stroller for storage there is a convenient carry handle on the left hand side of the pram. The fold is compact and I am easily able to fit it behind the 3rd row seat of my car.

The Techno XT pushes quite well inside and moves smoothly. I have owned a Quinny Zapp and a Bugaboo Bee and these are both a dream to push inside but I feel the Maclaren performs well as it also steers and handles well on outside terrain. The Techno XT has suspension on all 4 sets of wheels so does quite well on grass and rough ground considering it is a stroller.

In shopping centres and smooth surfaces it pushes well, although isn’t quite as smooth as other strollers I have owned. It steers and turns really well in busy and tight, enclosed spaces, it has quite a small footprint (48cm x 67cm or 18.9 x 26.4 in) and I have managed quite well in small gift shops and cosy cafes over the past few weeks!

Steering one handed is difficult in my opinion and I find it easier to have both hands on the handles.

Unfolded dimensions
48 cm or 18.9 in wide
67 cm or 26.4 in long

Folded dimensions
40 cm or 15.7 in wide
42 cm or 16.5 in high
108 cm or 42.5 in long

7.4 kg or 16.3 lbs

The Techno XT comes with a standard rain cover; a substantial, padded foot muff which can be completely unzipped and used as a liner; head support for newborn use; and a comfort pack in the colour of your choice which includes a pillow and 2 harness covers.

I have since purchased 3 more comfort packs in different colours and patterns, which has enabled me to change the look of the stroller quickly and easily. A Maclaren Travel Bag is available for purchase which is made from sturdy canvas and has wheels on the base for ease of use. A Maclaren Nappy Bag and Umbrella is also available to purchase..

My child is over 2 years so I haven’t used the foot muff or newborn head support, but the rain cover and comfort pack are very easy to use and of great quality.

I feel a cup holder would be of benefit on this stroller.

I bought this pram to suit my needs as a quick stroller that I could store in the boot of my car to use daily with my toddler daughter. I had previously owned a Bugaboo Bee which my child had outgrown and wanted a stroller that was great quality and had a few additional extras that would suit my stroller enthusiast needs! After owning this stroller for a month I am very happy with its style, functionality and accessories. It suits both my family and I well. I love the sun protection the hood provides and my daughter regularly sleeps in the stroller which is a bonus! It is light and easy to manoeuvre in and out of cars several times a day.

The Pros

  • Handles different terrain well for a lightweight stroller thanks to 4 wheeled suspension
  • Compact one piece fold
  • 4 position recline, suitable for newborns upward
  • Comfortable seat
  • Deep double fold sun canopy for excellent sun protection, plus the additional rain canopy

The Cons

  • The underseat basket is not the most accessible and is not made to hold anything substantial in weight
  • It is difficult to push this stroller one handed
  • The Maclaren is not really designed for long outdoor walks due to the smaller wheel size
  • The Maclaren Techno XT has a moderately expensive price tag
