Hi all,

I have a sand cammy, and the base fabric looks worn out and stained - and I've ordered a charcoal base to replace it. I'm thinking of giving the sand base a new look with a black spray paint - but I'm no DIYer so I have no idea what I am doing or if it would even work. Any experienced DIYers (or even inexperienced DIYers, and not even DIYers!) out there with some opinions please? :)

I am no DIYer!

However, I wouldn't use spray paint. You can get fabric dye, I would use this. At craft stores they sell it, plus at Coles/Chemists there is a brand called Dylon and they are a couple of dollars for their fabric dyes.
Website: http://www.dylon.com.au/

Whatever you decide to do though, let me know!

If I am honest my instant reaction to your post was "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Please don't spray paint any part of it, no damage could be worse than that.

Have you given it a really good clean? Like soaked it in Napisan for a day and ran it through the machine a few times?

What is so wrong with it that you would consider such a drastic measure?

You can sell bases on eBay for a decent amount, why not sell it if you've ordered a replacement?

Well, it was just a thought for a silly project... I've been thinking of doing a couple of crafty thingos so this was probably an extension of that. I've always wanted a darker fabric for the Cammy, and I just can't be bothered to sell the base! The stuff really does look dreadful and the mess does not budge.

I might do it anyway as a trial... I might dye the basket with Dylon and spray paint the seat. Just to see *shrugs*

Can we see a picture of it, maybe someone can help if we knew what was on it? You might be surprised how well they can clean up. What have you done to try to clean it?

People have lifted some amazing stuff of fabrics on here.

Members have dyed fabrics successfully before, but it usually works best if you are trying to restore it to it's original colour.

I'd be really worried the paint will rub off onto your little ones clothes....
There is an upholstery spray you can get that is a better option if you go up to the search function and type in upholstery it will bring up all the past posts about it or PM hugg1979

Ah, I say try anything for fun!!!
There is always bleach [oh shock horror, sounds extreme doesn't it?]

I had some sand bases that were revolting, and in hindsight, I should have dyed them, but as it was mainly the seat bit [ the pad where bubs bum goes] a liner fixed it aesthetically!!!

I thought you were posting about painting the FRAME-that would be an interesting project..... scary, but the results could be good lol

Maybe try Milton Sterilizing Solution? It is a form of bleach which I successfully used on a second hand Frog to lift mould? I followed it with Preen + Napi San and then the washing machine and sun drying.

Someone has posted doing this before, I think it was an Orbit, it looked good, but I'd worry about scratches.

Gosh the upholstery spray looks awesome! Must check it out at my local hardware mecca (I don't live in Aus so can't get it shipped to me from there).

Hmm I do have a custom liner and seat pad coming my way... maybe I might change the colour of just the back of the seat base, the part which isn't covered by the liner and seat pad. Also the basket to match.

It may look absolutely awful! But I'm keen to just play around and see how it looks :D

I tried Dylon dyes and they did nothing but as Mel said I tried the upholstery sprays as well and they worked. Really I need one more can to complete the makeover but in the meantime we are using a liner so you don't see it most of the time.

Just be aware if you spray the hood you will also dye the inside of the hood the same colour as it will bleed through

I'm trying a dyeing experiment this afternoon. I had 2 boxes of permanent dye left over from a Cameleon that I was once going to dye so its a somewhat no cost experiment.
If it doesn't work then I'll buy some of the fabric spray I think.
